The Distance Lens

The Distance Lens is our framework for viewing successes and misfires in today’s highly distributed organizations. It provides a foundational blueprint to help people work well together across the distances that separate them.

The four types of distances impacting organizational success:

  • Physical

    When people from across the cube, town or globe work together, steps must be taken to minimize the impact of the distance between them.

  • Interpersonal

    Differing styles, ages, cultures or motivations (to name a few) often trigger a sense of aloofness, avoidance and hesitation. Untended, this detachment gap grows, lowering performance, satisfaction and employee retention.

  • Organizational

    This distance exists between departments, organizational structure or teams. It’s common during mergers, acquisitions and rapid growth. It often manifests in unhealthy competition and conflict.

  • Technological

    This is the distance created through differing choices in technology and how the technology is used to communicate and get work done. It encompasses the assumptions about others based on their technology habits.
